Built around 2,000 years ago as tombs for the first Christians, the catacombs house burial niches, mosaics, sarcophagi, and ancient religious paintings.

Inside the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, you’ll also find an altar where Christians held mass during times of persecution. In the Catacombs of San Callisto, you can visit the Crypt of the Popes and admire significant examples of early Christian art.

As Christianity became popular in Rome, a solution was needed to bury a large number of people, most of whom couldn’t afford expensive tombs or mausoleums. The soft tuff abundant in the city provided the answer.

Between the 2nd and 5th centuries, 60 catacombs were excavated over several layers, two of which were reserved for Jews. Among these, five belonging to the Christian complex are regularly open to the public, offering a uniquely different Roman tour experience!
