Built approximately 2,000 years ago as tombs for early Christians, the catacombs hide burial niches, mosaics, sarcophagi, and ancient religious paintings.
Inside the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, you will find an altar where Christians celebrated Mass during the period of persecution. In the Catacombs of San Callisto, you can visit the Crypt of the Popes and admire significant examples of early Christian art.
When Christianity became popular in Rome, a solution was needed to bury a large number of people, most of whom could not afford expensive tombs or mausoleums. The soft tuff rock abundant in the city provided the perfect solution.
From the 2nd to the 5th century, 60 catacombs were excavated across multiple layers, two of which were reserved for Jews. Among these, five Christian catacombs are regularly open to the public, offering a very different tour of Rome!
